Vivitrol

Prevent Relapse with Vivitrol: Vivitrol is an FDA Approved extended-release injectable version of Naltrexone that is given once a month. It is known as an opiate antagonist, meaning it works by binding with and blocking the receptor sites in the brain that would normally be affected by opiates or alcohol. Vivitrol was originally approved by the FDA in 2006 for the treatment of alcohol dependence and in 2010 for the treatment of opioid dependence.

How It Works: Vivitrol is a non addictive medication that works on the physical addiction of alcohol or opioids by blocking the pleasurable feelings associated with opioid or alcohol use. Vivitrol is used to prevent relapse in people who became dependent on opioid medicine and then stopped using it. Vivitrol can help keep you from feeling a "need" to use the opioid. Vivitrol is also used to treat alcoholism by reducing your urge to drink alcohol. This may help you drink less or stop drinking altogether.

What to Expect: Vivitrol is a non-addictive, once monthly injection. You should stop drinking before starting Vivitrol. For opioid dependent patients, this medication should be taken when the patient is opioid-free for a minimum of 7-14 days to avoid sudden opioid withdrawal, and from there meet with doctor every 3-4 weeks.
